For the local government, “this increase in tourist activity must be compatible with guaranteeing the quality of services and the quality of life of the residents”
The tourism sector of Poio registered an average occupancy of 71% during the month of July, an increase of 7 points over the data of 2024 (64.36%) and 10 points over 2023 (60.89%).
The Councilor for Tourism, Rocío Cochón, put the occupancy at 67% in the first half of the month and 75% in the second half, an important increase compared to the same periods of the last two years, and recalled that this increase occurred at the same time that the number of available accommodation places grew.
Cochón also wanted to highlight the strength of other activities, such as nautical tourism, the Jacobean route, and visits to the Casa-Museo de Colón. Regarding the first, the Combarro Marina had 97% of its more than 300 moorings occupied during the month, and the celebration of the Nautical Meeting of the centenary Irish Cruising Club. The Combarro Marina has already hung the ‘full’ sign for August, with 100% of the moorings reserved.
The Jacobean routes that cross the Council had great activity, with more than 1,000 people who sealed their Compostela in the Council or in the Monastery, from all the Autonomous Communities and half a hundred countries from the five continents, which on some days exceeded 100 pilgrims. A very positive fact, since it does not include weekends, holidays and certain hours. Likewise, the Colón Museum received 150 visitors, a third of them foreigners, with the presence of academics, experts and those interested in the Galician Columbus theory from the United States, Norway, Argentina or Brazil.
Finally, in the tourist offices located in Casal de Ferreirós, in San Salvador, and in the Escola do Campo, in Combarro, the professionals attended more than 2,000 users, with an increasing percentage of foreign visitors.
Cochón stressed that “the tourism sector of Poio is also in its best moment”, with more places available and more visitors in high season, but also the rest of the year, with greater internationalization, diversification and deseasonalization. “A growth that is possible thanks to the coordinated effort of the sector and the local administration, with a quality summer program or more parking spaces.” However, she explained that “this increase in tourist activity has to be compatible with guaranteeing the quality of services and also the quality of life of the residents”. For this reason, she stated that the local government will continue to monitor to ensure compliance with the rules “and guarantee the best coexistence between tourist activities and the neighborhood”
REINFORCEMENT OF THE TOURIST OFFICE OF CASAL DE FERREIRÓS
Also during this month, the Tourist Office of Casal de Ferreirós was reinforced with the incorporation of a technician, hired under a grant from the Pontevedra Provincial Council of 7,000 euros.
In addition, the signage and visual elements were renewed with the new brand image of Turismo Rías Baixas, a network to which the Office is attached.
